Classes Zhokhova: how to work. Advantages and disadvantages
The method of teaching in an elementary school “according to Zhokhov” is surrounded by mystery and raises many questions. Inna Baranova, a journalist and mom of a first-grader-homescaler, decided to find out what the innovative method promises and what the critics' claims are about.
Vladimir Ivanovich Zhokhov - Honored Teacher of Russia, author of textbooks for secondary schools and methodologist - developed a technology for teaching primary school children. In Russia, there are only a few dozen Zhokhov classes, but probably their number will grow: interest in alternative methods of education is high now, and most of the reviews on the Internet are enthusiastic.
Methodology Zhokhov. Promises
Zhokhovskaya technique, judging by the "pre-election" promises, has many advantages over conventional school lessons and promises students incredible:
- reducing the incidence of two to three times;
- children read and write a lot and readily go to school in a meaningful and fun way;
- cognitive activity of children is normalized - both at school and at home or in circles and sections;
- for 4 months of work, children easily learn the basic material of 2 years of study;
- socio-psychological indicators are improving: children sing, dance, feel free to speak in public.
One of these points is enough to get interested in the Zhokhov system, and after all, among other achievements, there is “improvement of the musculoskeletal system” and “realization of the potential laid down by nature.” However, due to which fantastic results are achieved, it remains a mystery. In free access, descriptions of magic tricks cannot be found, V.I. Zhokhov himself shares them only with teachers who already have the first or second class formed and, apparently, takes the floor from them that all the developments will remain a secret.
How is it organized
The project is based on the self-organization of parents. The initiative to open classes always comes from people who read about the methodology on the Internet, were inspired and went to look for like-minded people, go to schools, advertise the system to principals and teachers, using tempting information from official groups.
That is, in order for the child to fall into the “Zhokhovsky” class, you need to either attach to the opening class only, or assemble it yourself. An in-person group of at least 16 people is a prerequisite for starting work on the system. As a rule, “Zhokhov” classes are opened on the basis of public schools.
Before the beginning of the school year, parents pay for the annual course of the methodology - this is a disc with multimedia materials, as well as weekly online seminars for the teacher.
What is unusual in the Zhokhov system
- Active use of the projector in the classroom.
- Multisubject lessons, information is given in small blocks, for example, singing in mathematics, discussing the “World around” or linguistics topics.
- Nonlinear structure of the presentation of the material: the topics are repeated and overlap. If the child is sick and missed several days, he will not receive information on the topic more than once.
- No importance is attached to the maintenance of the notebook (the notorious “retreat two cells”). Instead of focusing on the development of fine motor skills, an emphasis is placed on brain development. In the first half of the first class there are no prescriptions, but there are marker boards.
- The value of teamwork is cultivated, honored answers are in unison.
- The age of children in a class can be from 5.5 to 8 years.
- It is stated that the physical activity of schoolchildren is not limited, they can move, approach the teacher and help comrades.
What are the doubts
The most serious reproaches are made to the Zhokhov method in connection with the fact that it is impossible to get acquainted in advance with the method itself, or with at least one reference to the scientific research on which it relies. In addition to parents and advertising promises, something reminiscent of the rhetoric of "shop on the couch," the thoughtful parent has nothing to analyze.
In a situation of information shortage, fans of the system are forced to wave their hands and praise the educational technology without any proof. In official groups they nod to the video performances of V.I. Zhokhov himself, for example, such. However, after viewing more questions than answers. For example, the author of the methodology claims that his work is based on the outstanding achievements of neurophysiology and psycholinguistics, but he will not say anything more concretely because the listeners are not able to understand this.
There are a lot of rather strange statements in the speeches that “between 6 and 8 years old children are dumping neurons that have already appeared but have not started working” (the link is the same), that “10-15 percent of decent teachers are in school”, or that in the first two weeks, children go through almost the entire first class in order to “load up the stored neurons with work”. In the slightest degree, an educated person will be upset at hearing something like this.
Another serious argument against the methodology - slides in class play a greater role than the teacher. It is argued that each slide is thought out in terms of colors, their combinations and saturation, all lines, arrows, fonts and terms are important, it even matters at what angle a particular word creeps onto the screen. It seems that the slides are arranged in such a way as to not only contribute to the prevention of eye diseases, eliminate childhood fatigue in the classroom, but also to establish the correct functioning of the brain. In this process, the role of the teacher is reduced only to pressing the button in time, uttering the harvested words and, possibly, controlling the moments when something goes wrong - that’s all.
V.I. Zhokhov: “The first impact stream on the student is through the screen. We kindly ask the teachers: remove all unnecessary things from the class, especially for the first time, for example, such funny pictures that you can open your mouth and look at for a long time. We do not need this. We get a kindergarten child with unformed attention. He has an ugly frontal lobe, and until we organize the attention, it will take a month to deal with the frontal lobes, it’s necessary that there should be no distractions. Roughly speaking, it is necessary to make it so that there is simply nowhere else to look: a picture on the screen and nothing more ... " Read more - here.
Classical training is based on the contact of the teacher with the class, its charisma, its ability to hold attention, to explain the complex in simple words, to see which of the children moves at what pace ... Here the lesson is built according to different principles. Bright slides constantly hold involuntary attention, the work is proceeding at a fairly fast pace, a lot of practical tasks are given, there is a tight training.
Here is what Vladimir Pogodin, a logpoint user, writes in his LiveJournal: “One of the features of the technique, besides the predominant use of interactive frontal simulators, is time programming. Zhokhov plans the time of children's reactions to certain influences, building them in a certain order. The teacher intervenes in difficult moments so that the action does not “hang”. The impact is constant, the child is led from the beginning to the end of the lesson, his creative efforts are in the temporal and informative frameworks that are assigned by the course. ”
Primary School in Zhokhov. What's next?
According to reviews after the first year of study, children cheerfully count as a column, they know the multiplication table and feel free to speak in front of the class. But even “advanced” training and terrific skills of graduates of Zhokhov classes become a minus when you realize that the methodology is designed only for elementary school. And what should parents and children do next? Go to a regular school and adapt among children who are not used to walking around the audience during the lesson? Or maybe go to family education?
Olga Vasilyeva, psychologist, head of the Nest family space:
“I seriously thought about the class of Zhokhov. I think that this is a good alternative to regular mass school, especially now that his son has gone to the first class of the gymnasium. What was embarrassing was the impression that the attachment to peers was actively forming in the classroom. It is cultivated: children are given such knowledge so that they are definitely at home more aware than their parents, parents cannot do homework with children. Those. remove parents, knock down the hierarchy, peers in the foreground, there is a class like one family. Another minus is the training according to the plan of the methodologist, Zhokhov, the role of the teacher is minimal. But more dynamic than in a regular school. In general, I have no single opinion. ”
