Food, can not stand you! About food allergies in children

Even benign food can be poisonous if the child or adult has an allergy to a particular product. Among children, every third person suffers from food allergies.

My child and I rested in Egypt. Sea, sun, delicious food - paradise, and only. All the rest is spoiled for nothing, from where a strong cold that has taken his son. A strange thing - the usual medications that we have always taken in such cases, this time they didn’t act on their son at all - they flew from my nose like a bucket. And only then I noticed that Andryushka’s whites of her eyes turned red and he constantly rubs them with his fist. "Allergy," I guessed. But for what? In my mind went over everything that the child has recently eaten at the hotel. Shrimps fell under suspicion. It was in Egypt that Andrei first tasted this food and literally “hooked” it during the rest (later, my speculations were confirmed by skin tests that we did for an allergist). My strict ban on touching seafood and several antihistamine tablets saved our rest.

Food allergies: under suspicion - everything

Do not think that food allergies - the heritage of modernity. Of course, today much more people suffer from it than in the old days. This is largely due to bad ecology, as well as preservatives and chemicals, which are stuffed with the most seductive delicacies. However, inadequate food reactions have been known since antiquity. So Hippocrates first described an episode of intolerance to cow's milk, and Galen - a case of hypersensitivity to goat milk. Then the list of "unreliable" got fish and eggs. Then - more: they were joined by legumes, grains, fruits. Well, today, according to doctors, there simply is no such product to which a person could not have an allergy. However, the most common food allergens are known. Of animal products, it is cow and goat milk, chicken eggs, fish and seafood. From plant foods - beans and nuts, wheat, rye, barley and corn. It is necessary to be afraid of the fruit and vegetables having red and orange fruits, and also kiwi, avocado, melons, grapes. In recent years, the number of serious allergic reactions (up to anaphylactic shock) to the reception of peanuts has increased. This type of allergy is deadly. It is manifested by lightning edema of the larynx, a sharp drop in blood pressure and takes many more lives than all other cases of food intolerance.

Hidden allergens

Of particular danger are hidden food allergens, that is, those additives, the existence of which is possible only after a careful reading of the label, since the addition of a dangerous ingredient is not always noticeable to the taste. Therefore, parents of children suffering from food allergies should get used to carefully examine the composition of the product indicated on the package before offering something to eat to their child. For example, the same peanut is often used as one of the components in the manufacture of cookies, sweets, and is also widely used in Chinese and Thai dishes. Moreover, medicine describes frequent cases when allergy sufferers react not to the product that is dangerous for them, but to contacts with people who ate it. Even tragic stories are known when a girl who was allergic to peanuts died after being kissed by a guy who had a peanut butter sandwich. In addition to natural allergens, chemically synthesized food substances are no less dangerous. So, from 3000 kinds of food additives the most allergic:

  • preservatives - sulfites (E 220-227), nitrites (E 249-252), benzoic acid (E 210-219);
  • antioxidants - butyl hydroxyanisole and butyl hydroxytoluene (E 321);
  • the dyes are tartrazine (E 102), yellow-orange S (E 110), azorubine (E 122), amaranth (E 123), red cochineal (E 124), erythrosine (E 127), diamond BN (E 151);
  • flavoring agents - glutamates (E 550-553).

If the child is prone to allergies, it is better to avoid food with chemical additives.

Signs of an allergy: what was it?

Signs of food allergies are varied. There may be symptoms similar to ARVI: fever, runny nose, cough, sinusitis. Problems with the gastrointestinal tract are possible (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, diarrhea or constipation, colic, heartburn. There are skin manifestations: atopic dermatitis, urticaria, angioedema. Changes in the nervous system are also common: migraine, depression , excitability, drowsiness, insomnia, irritability. Some allergic people complain of pain in the joints and muscles. Since it is not easy to distinguish banal intestinal poisoning or acute respiratory infections from food allergies, the diagnosis needs a complex, complex. There are several clinical and laboratory research methods, as well as, in addition to an allergist examination, a visit to a gastroenterologist. Parents of children with food allergies can be of great help to doctors if they carefully keep a food diary, where to write down in detail when and what the child ate. he felt after that.

How to find the culprit

To clarify the diagnosis conduct skin tests. On the inner surface of the elbow cause droplets of 10-15 most common allergens. Then the doctor makes a metal feather a small scratch in this place. After a couple of minutes, the result is evaluated by the skin reaction. For intradermal tests make a deeper incision. This method is used if the allergy is not pronounced enough. A more informative method of diagnosis - a study of blood from a vein. Additional methods of research include gastroscopy with biopsy of the small intestine and others.

Goodbye fish!

Treat food allergies diet. It is about the exclusion of hazardous products. And with the ineffectiveness of this method or if it is impossible to determine the cause of food intolerance, medications are prescribed. Refusal of risky gastronomic products can be temporary. Sometimes an improvement occurs even with the restriction of the use of "dangerous" food. But most often doctors recommend completely forgetting about the existence of certain products. After some time, after about two years of abstaining from the banned delicacy, it will be possible to celebrate with him a new meeting. However, re-enter the product in the diet should be carefully, gradually increasing its quantity. Unfortunately, allergies to peanuts, fish or crustaceans usually persist for life. It is necessary to treat food allergies, especially in children, because it is from it, as a rule, the development of bronchial asthma and diseases of the digestive tract begins.
